For years I heard Ted Whitney tell the story of the Bull Thistle, and I always chuckled under my breath. He was very proud of the symbolism and its representation of the community.
My Dad, Herm Weiskotten, who was the Educator at Rogers Center in Sherburne would also tell the story, but then would would ask the students to consider the other side of the story and make up their own mind: since it was an invasive species from Eurpope it was unlikely that the Indians knew it let alone had a particular word for it.
Since Dad and Ted were good friends, I am sure they had some good conversations over the topic!
Ted, who outlived my Dad by many years, and whom I kept contact with until his passing a few years ago, was polite enough to never mention if there was any disagreement!
Also, what Dolores says goes with me, as I'll definitely trust her knowledge on the subject of Native Americans in the region!
