Despite the fact that New York State is waging a war against invasive species of plants and animals which crowd out native species, I can't see the people of Chenango County changing. Being a life long resident has taught me that no amount of pointing out that they are worshiping a myth will persuade them. They are too locked in their ways, and afraid to admit past mistakes. Earlier settlers made a mistake translating the Native American language and for generations have believed that "Chenango" meant "Land of the Bullthistle", and, by God, a belief is a belief, and nothing will change their minds.
Yes, the bullthistle is pretty, yes the Scots embrace it and brought it here, but, face it, it is NOT the namesake of Chenango County. As far as those who wave patriotism in our faces, remember that the Bald Eagle is a Native Bird, and not an invasive species, it was here long before any Europeans came here. This can't be said for the Bullthistle.
Though admitting that Chenango County is not the Land of the Bullthistle, and choosing a Native Flower for the county may be the proper thing to correct history, there is a FAT CHANCE that this movement will succeed!
(Sorry to sound so cynical, but experience has taught me that old ways die hard.)
